Joseph Aaron Smith was implicated following an unsuccessful Federal raid on a suspected illegal contraband shipment. During a subsequent raid on his residence to apprehend him, he was shot in the head by law enforcement and died at the scene.
About
Smith was identified by Agent Mitchell Loeb to Agent Phillip Broyles as a possible suspect in a smuggling operation from Europe to the United States. His InterPol file indicated that he was born on 18 July, 1971. Loeb stated the Smith had begun working for a shipping company a week before the suspect container was packed, and that Smith had access to the container. Loeb added that Smith also had a science background, and that he had travelled to Budapest eight times in the previous year. Smith's residence was raided by a SWAT team with the intent to take him into custody and determine his involvment in the smuggling operation. Agent Charlie Francis told Agent Broyles that he found a connection to Smith in a document Loeb had brought back from Germany. In the encrypted paperwork, a decoded line of it was a local phone number - registered to Smith. On hearing the details of Agent Francis' investigative efforts, Agent Broyles ordered a radio-silent SWAT team assault at Smith's residence at 4331 Broad Street in Saugus, MA.
Agent Olivia Dunham received a private note from David Jones during her efforts to see him in Wissenschaft Prison. Smith was a colleague of Jones and Jones would only grant an interview if he was allowed to talk to Smith on the telephone the following morning. Peter Bishop overheard Broyles discussing the raid to apprehend Smith. He informed Dunham of this and she directed him to intercept Broyles to tell him the condition that Jones levied on her interview. Bishop drove to Smith's residence to contact Broyles, but was unable to inform Broyles when he was restrained behind the police barricade.
Smith fled his residence through a second-story window when the SWAT team entered it to apprehend him. Smith jumped to the ground, hopped a fence and was ordered to stop. Smith pulled a pistol from his waistband and was shot in the forehead when he threatened the SWAT team with the weapon.
Dr. Walter Bishop extracted the information Agent Dunham needed for the Jones interview from the corpse of Joseph Smith.
Bishop convinced the authorities to allow him to attempt to question the freshly deceased Smith using electronic stimulation, connecting the corpse to his living son in order to amplify and relay latent thoughts. Smith's body was covered in ice, electrodes and protective gel for the procedure. His corpse lurched and flinched when he received the electrical stimulation required to transfer his residual memories. The nature of Smith's fatal brain injury prevented Peter Bishop from fully visualizing the complete answer to the question posed by Jones. Smith answered the question posed by Mr. Jones to his satisfaction. Dunham told Jones that she would ask the question of Smith over the phone, then relay the answer. She never revealed to Jones that Smith was dead. Dunham relayed the question "Where does the gentleman live?" through to the science team. Smith's trace memories had enough of an impact on Peter Bishop to return an answer Little Hill, relayed back through channels to Jones... eventually leading to the successful recovery of Agent Loeb. Smith was not seen after the electrical procedure. His final status was never addressed.
