- Introduction
Enemy Of My Enemy is the ninth episode of the fourth season of FRINGE. It first aired on 20 January, 2012. Peter's gains support in the alternate universe and unites the two sides in an effort to eradicate the shapeshifter threat and their creator. Walter assesses his life and decides to participate in the effort.
Synopsis
At Fringe Division Headquarters in the parallel universe, Colonel Philip Broyles sifts through security camera footage from the building he manages trying to isolate FBI Agent Lee's location following his apprehension by Agent Dunham and Captain Lee. Broyles, a co-conspirator of David Jones, deduces from the footage that his agents have sequestered their detainee in one of several maintenance rooms while they investigate a lead in New York's Flatiron District. Aware of Lee's location in the building, Broyles finds a secure lock box he maintains in a file cabinet, opens it and extracts a syringe and a vial filled with lime-colored liquid. He loads the syringe with the liquid and prepares to depart his office with the syringe in his pocket. En route to the maintenance room holding Agent Lee, Colonel Broyles is intercepted by his boss - Secretary Walter Bishop. Bishop needs him to release Agent Lee from custody immediately. Escorting the senior politician is Peter Bishop. Secretary Bishop and Colonel Broyles retire to Broyles' office for a private discussion. Bishop believes that shapeshifters have infiltrated his organization, leaving them, and other branches of the government vulnerable. Agent Murphy (Back To Where You've Never Been) from the Fringe Division may have been a shapeshifter too. Broyles informs Bishop that Agents Lee and Dunham are on top of the Murphy incident. They ran a trace on Murphy's last phone call and are currently in the field investigating.Following their call trace to a dilapidated industrial district, Bolivia Dunham and Lincoln Lee exit their vehicle and move toward the building where they believe the call to Agent Murphy originated. Lincoln knew Murphy well and nothing he remembers about his colleague was suspect. Bolivia's intuition is telling her that their prisoner, FBI-man Lee is an honest agent. The duo approaches and enters the makeshift lab of David Jones and finds him near one of his latest shapeshifter creations. Jones is less than surprised at the intrusion and offers no resistance, other than a quiet, self-absorbed, maniacal diatribe. The nearby female shapeshifter in stasis begins to writhe... Jones, her creator, has timed his theatrics to coincide with his arrest. He has killed her as an example to the Fringe agents. He loved his creation dearly - now - imagine what he will do to those he does not care about. Surrender was his goal - now he needs to see those in charge.
ACT I
After returning from the abandoned opera house in Brooklyn, where Peter established his portal between universes, Olivia stops by Walter's lab to get Astrid started on a little research project for her. Under-utilized recently, Walter is busy with his latest diversion - molecular gastronomy - and the promise of Parmesan Ice Cream. Less than enthusiatic about Walter's perverted treatment of simple foods, Astrid takes a sidebar with Olivia and learns of her new tasking... checking a blood sample against global databases to learn what she can about the donor. Astrid studies Olivia and senses she is troubled with something. Olivia confesses her transgression with helping Peter cross to the other universe and sending the new guy, Agent Lee, along with him to reconnoiter in the war against the shapeshifters. They haven't returned yet, and she needs to go brief the boss, Broyles, on the botched mission... a mission he knows nothing about, and certainly did not approve. Good luck. In the parking garage at Fringe Division Headquarters, Colonel Broyles meets his agents when they return with Doctor Jones. Bolivia confidently reports that their suspect is certifiably insane. Lincoln has nothing to report - Jones has no identification and doesn't register on any databases they have access to. The science team is going over his compound, trying to find anything they can. Bolivia has the impression (correctly) that Jones knew that they were going to show-up at his lab. Broyles orders them to move Jones to an interrogation room - not a maintenance closet like Agent Lee. Upstairs in the Situation Room, Peter joins the freshly liberated Agent Lee and learns of the apprehension of the conspirator that tried to have them assassinated. Peter plans to leave - an escort is on the way to take them to Liberty Island and get them back to the other universe. Lee is adamant that they need to remain where they are. They should remain and try to get some answers... help with the interrogation. Peter is set on leaving. He has gained Secretary Bishop's trust and needs to get back and start reviewing the blueprints of the Wave Sink Device. Both are motivated - Peter wants to go home to his timeline. Lee wants to engage the enemy that killed his best friend. Peter stops talking and quietly studies the suspect when he is brought to a nearby interrogation room - he immediately recognizes the man that ordered his death.
The female caller, Doctor Samuels, places a small, cylindrical container on the counter at the hospital emergency room where she works. After putting the speakerphone on, and briskly walking away from the container, the crowded ward fills with a choking vapor as Samuels exits the area. The crutch she slides through the handles on the door guarantees that no one will escape. The screams of panic and pain fill Fringe Division as Jones' terror attack rattles everyone, except Jones.
ACT II
At the Fringe Task Force operations center in the Federal Building in Boston, Olivia finds her way to Phillip Broyles office to come clean about the situation with Peter Bishop and Agent Lee. She is pre-empted by Broyles. He already knows about her unauthorized activities in helping them cross to the parallel universe. What's worse is that he had to hear it from his counterpart, Colonel Broyles. Neither of them found her insubordination amusing. They will talk about that later though - first he needs to brief her on the David Robert Jones situation - a convict from this universe that has been making trouble in the other universe.
In a busy plaza amid the tall buildings in midtown Manhatan, David Jones lounges in plain sight as multiple teams of agents monitor him from afar. Bolivia, sitting across the plaza with Agent Lee, anticipates that Jones is going to try and ditch his watchers as soon as the business lunch crowd hits the plaza. Lincoln and Broyles are posted down the street in their vehicle, ready to follow Jones as soon as he takes any action. The teams go on alert when Jones walks to a nearby trash can and removes a paper bag that was planted there for him. Jones removes a small cannister and a stack of cash from the bag, then introduces himself to a young man a few feet away. Jones wants to give the money he has in his hand to those around him, and he needs help doing so. A crowd immediately clamors around Jones as the word goes out to those in earshot - the agents watching Jones know that he is making his move. Back in the Situation Room, Agent Farnsworth has been monitoring the tracking device that Jones swallowed on her sensors. She reports that the single device she was tracking is coming back now as several dozen. Bolivia figures out what Jones has done... duplicated his tracking frequency and placed micro-trackers on the money he is giving away. He is going to try and disappear in the electronic confusion. All of the units monitoring Jones are ordered into the plaza by Colonel Broyles to visually locate Jones. Popular with the locals, Jones moves to several locations in the plaza to spread the wealth and create more havoc in his wake. At his final stop, Jones throws what cash he has left into the air, then drinks the contents of the container he retrieved from the paper bag. A score of new electronic signatures appear on the tracking monitors as the crowd collects the loose cash. One electronic return disappears though - Jones. His decoy and deception complete, Jones slips into a side alley and into the limousine waithing there for him. As he is driven from the scene, Jones makes eye contact with Colonel Broyles, who is quietly watching the alley as his co-conspirator eludes Fringe Division. The order goes out for all personnel to return to headquarters.
ACT III
That evening, Secretary and Mrs. Bishop enjoy fine dining in a well-appointed restaurant. Elizabeth knows her husband is upset over the events of the day. He is. He took a gamble when he released Jones and lost when Jones evaded the Fringe investigators. Elizabeth knows her husband well enough - something else is on his mind. Secretary Bishop, though he wants to, doesn't think he will be able to help Peter with his quest. He has no idea how to reconfigure the machine on Liberty Island to get it to perform the function that Peter needs it to. It suddenly dawns on Elizabeth that she may be able to get Peter the assistance he needs. In the Situation Room at Fringe Division Headquarters, Agent Farnsworth reports to Colonel Broyles on her findings from the data disk that Jones had demanded. It contained geological data garnered from satellite and radar sources, but she hasn't been able to determine what exactly the data was focused on... minerals? Oil deposits? Anything of value? Broyles wants an update if she finds any meaningful pattern in the data. Peter joins Farnsworth at her workstation once Broyles moves on - he is wondering if he can have a look at the data she is studying. She gladly steps aside - slightly fascinated with the cool guy who may be from another timeline. Bolivia is busy nearby. She has been working on getting Jones' image loaded into the visual recognition database so he'll have a profile the surveillance network can use. Agent Lee joins her with a suspicion he has been pondering... how did Jones pinpoint the tracking their frequency so quickly? Is Jones getting inside information from a member of Fringe Division? Agent Farnsworth grabs the pair and brings them back to her monitor - Peter believes he knows where Jones is going. Broyles meets them there and Peter shares his deduction. Jones geologic data suggests that he is after a mineral named Amphilicite, typically found under large limestone deposits. In its' natural state, Amphilicite is inert, however, if it is properly processed, it can be made into a very powerful energy source. Amphilicite can even be weaponized and used to "blow a hole in the universe". Looking at the patterns in the data retrieved from Brandon Fayette's office, Jones will most likely attempt to excavate the mineral from one specific quarry in the Hudson River Valley. Farnsworth has already made contact with the quarry operators and was told nothing unusual has happened there recently. Peter thinks they may finally be one step ahead of Jones now. Broyles issues the order to secure the quarry secured immediately.
The Fringe response team arrives in three vehicles at Mohonk Quarry in upstate New York. With nobody on scene other than Broyles and his team, it appears they have secured the objective before Jones could arrive. Lincoln tests the ground with an electronic scanner and learns that there hasn't been any excavation in the quarry for the past few months. Colonel Broyles directs his agents to security positions around the quarry to take advantage of the terrain. Agent Farnsworth has been monitoring from the Situation Room along with Peter and Agent Lee. Peter studies the layout of the quarry from the data they retrieved and wants to make a recommendation. Farnsworth patches him through to the agents in the field and he passes on his tactical advice... secure the access road on the North side. Bolivia and Lincoln get the message - but it doesn't make any sense, there is no access road on the North side. Peter immediately recognizes the problem they face... they are in the wrong Mohonk Quarry. Jones is going to try and excavate the Amphilicite in Walter and Olivia's universe.
In a forest clearing, somewhere in the Hudson River Valley, shape-shifter Nadine Park and an accomplice deploy the equipment needed to establish a portal between universes. Once corridor tracking has been completed, the device is activated and a large brane opens between the parallel locations. David Robert Jones steps through the portal and into this universe. Breathing hard and deep, he declares the atmosphere on this side tastes sweeter.
ACT IV
In his lab, Walter finds more chores to fill his empty schedule. This time Gene, his bovine amigo, is getting the spa treatment with a good brushing and an earful of Farmer's Almanac truisms. Walter's FBI security man approaches with news of a visitor for the Doctor. Walter doesn't want to be bothered - what he doing is important. The agent steps aside and Elizabeth Bishop approaches. Walter freezes at the sound of the familiar voice and initially hesitates to look up - in case he had imagined it. He turns to see that he had not. He can barely speak - his heart soars at the beauty of the woman he has loved for decades. Elizabeth brings him back to reality - reminding him that she is not his Elizabeth. Walter finds solid emotionally footing and concedes to the fact that she is married to Secretary Bishop. Elizabeth had always thought that they would never see one another again after he abducted her child so long ago. Perhaps it is appropriate now that they meet again under current circumstances... a version of their sons needs their help. Walter is reluctant - his decision to not involve himself in this matter is quite firm. Elizabeth opens the door to negotiation: He came to her to save a young man once... now she has returned to do the same. Back on Liberty Island, Agent Lee and Peter Bishop are greeted by Broyles and Olivia as they pass through the security entrance point on this side of the trans-universal lab. Peter immediately goes on record as the individual responsible for surpassing Broyles authority in this matter. They will get to that later, right now they need to getm to the helicopter and fly upstate to Mohonk Quarry and join-up with the technical team that has already deployed there. Peter lags behind to catch a word with Olivia. She reports the boss is really miffed - but then that's happened more than once. The trouble she is in should blow over... it always does.
In the Hudson River Valley in this universe, Jones and his troupe of criminals work busily at Mohonk Quarry to a fill the bay of a dump truck with the Amphilicite ore that Jones requires. The response team sent by Broyles races up the access road and Jones' team goes on alert at the intrusion. Jones orders his excavation folks to ready the dump truck for departure, then tasks Nadine Park to hold-off the pending assault. Peter, sitting behind Olivia as she drives into battle, asks Agent Lee if he can get one of his firearms - better safe than sorry. Indeed! Just as Peter racks the magazine on his pistol, automatic weapons fire riddles the vehicle. The convoy of inbound Federal Agents slide to a halt and vehicles are left for defendable positions behind barriers. As both sides exchange fire, Jones hops into the cab of the dump truck with the directive for the driver to leave. They are done at the quarry. Nadine Park drops one of the agents with a bullet and Peter returns the favor with a round to the shapeshifter's chest. He relocates to a more favorable position and is followed by Agent Lee. As the truck full of Amphilicite ore drives off, Olivia radios the team that she will pursue in her vehicle. She needs someone to contact Colonel Broyles on the other side and arrange to have a team meet her after she passes through the portal behind Jones. Peter knows the danger associated with the portal and gets on the tactical radio to warn Olivia - once Jones crosses over, the window will close behind him, and kill her when it does. Jones' man has the portal established and ready. Jones races through and escapes. Olivia, only fifty yards behind the truck, doesn't respond when Peter hails her on the radio. The portal closed, as Peter warned it would. Olivia only heeded his at the last possible moment. She is okay, but her vehicle did not fare as well.
ACT V
In a conference room on Liberty Island, Secretary Bishop addresses the lead investigators of both Fringe Divisions in front of Peter Bishop. The politician is direct and shares his perspective on the new threat both universes are confronted with. Because of the distrust and trepidation both parties hold for one another, he had wanted Peter to make the plea for cooperation against the new breed of shapeshifters. A coordinated search for Jones is the first imperative. Secondly, they will need to start theorizing on what it is Jones intends to do, or accomplish, with the dangerous amount of Amphicilite ore he recovered. It seems that Jones always has the upper hand when then encounter him - having anticipated all factors. Peter reminds everyone that there is one variable Jones could not have anticipated - him, Peter Bishop. After the meeting, Olivia corrals Peter and wants to get going on the fresh start they are enjoying with their alternate universe counterparts. Peter is exhausted from all of the action he has endured since stepping through the portal and needs rest. Olivia accedes - she'll have someone pick him up for work tomorrow morning. Oh... and thanks for saving her life at the quarry. In the campus home provided for Peter, Doctor Walter Bishop arrives at the front door after a lengthy walk from his laboratory. Tired and thirsty, Walter divulges the visit he had from Secretary Bishop's wife. Elizabeth made him see Peter's plight, and to understand the loneliness that Peter must certainly feel over the loss of his loved ones - an emotion that Walter is exceedingly familiar with. Peter beams at the new leaf Walter is turning over in his life. Walter is now acting like the man that Peter was hoping he would. Walter recognizes Peter's new home - Walter lived here once too.
